Tim Wise is joint-programme leader of both the Popular Music and Recording and Popular Musicology degrees. He teaches popular musicology and music history, as well as teaching on postgraduate programmes and leading postgraduate research. He studied music, English literature, and linguistics in his native Texas, earning a BA and two MA degrees from North Texas State University in Denton. He also has an MA in popular music studies and a PhD in music from the University of Liverpool, where his thesis supervisors were Philip Tagg and Michael Talbot. He has taught in universities in the USA, the UK, and the People’s Republic of China. He is also a trained piano technician and for seven years worked as a concert piano tuner for Steinway and Sons UK.
Popular music vocal styles are a key area of his research, and his articles on falsetto and yodelled techniques have received international recognition.
