Stephen Davismoon was born in London. He completed undergraduate studies in music at the University of Southampton in 1990, specializing in composition and performance. In 1996 he completed his Doctorate in Composition at the University of Edinburgh, studying with Nigel Osborne.
He has enjoyed a professional composition career for over 15 years, and has written music for a broad range of ensembles and situations – from solo works through to full orchestral pieces, with and without voices. He has also written a number of live electronic/interactive; electroacoustic and sound-art installation pieces.

He has had performances in Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine and Uruguay. He has worked with many notable musicians, institutions and festivals along the way: Roberto Fabbriciani; Rohan de Saram; Die Neuevocalsolisten; Scottish Opera; Centro Tempo Reale; Das Experimentalstudio der Heinrich Strobel Stiftung; Richard Craig; Tara Boumann; CCMIX Studios; Edinburgh International Festival – ‘Behind the Scenes’; Martyn Brabbins; Chamber Group of Scotland; Le Champs Libre; Ensemble Linea; Brake Drum Percussion Ensemble; The Edinburgh Quartet; Klangwerktage Hamburg; Finestre sul Novecento; The Tampere Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra.

He has written widely on subjects that relate to Contemporary Music Practice and History: his edited publications on Luigi Nono and Edgard Varese were well received; and he has a strong research interest in Algorithmic, Evolutionary and Interactive Music.

Before joining the University of Salford as its Director of Music in September 2010 he had gained a broad experience of the music HE sector in Scotland, spanning a period of nearly 20 years. He began lecturing at the University of Edinburgh in 1991 and subsequently held posts at the University of Glasgow; the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama; and the Ian Tomlin Academy of Music at Edinburgh Napier University whose activities he directed from January 2007 until September 2010.
