Jon graduated with a Dip Ad in Integrated Design and began working in the art department of London Photographic Company as a layout artist and photo re-toucher.
His commercial experience of television editing began in 1976 as an assistant film editor working with both 16mm and 35mm film stocks. By 1983 he had moved to Manchester and had worked as a freelance assistant in many of the regional BBC and Independent TV stations with credits on series such as Great Railway Journeys of the World and In Search of the Trojan Wars. He then made the transition to freelance film editor on network programmes and was working in both London and Manchester.
In 1984, in the Play at Home series for C4, Jon edited a documentary about New Order and also got his first network directing credit with Big Country.
Subsequently he alternated between editing for TV series such as The Media Show (C4) and No Limits (BBC2) and was also directing prestigious corporate training videos.
In 1989 Jon's credits included a Merchant Ivory production as Dubbing Editor on The Perfect Murder and the following year he directed Rough Guide to The World: Istanbul for BBC2.
His first foray into interactive multimedia was as Producer and Programme designer of an extensive interactive laser disc presentation for Dow Plastics.
After becoming more involved in training by writing and directing several training video presentations for Digital Equipment Corporation and directing Tony Buzan in Mindpower for BBC Enterprises he decided to pursue his interests in training and took his post at Salford in 1992.
Since then he has been teaching editing and helped oversee the change to non linear editing equipment at the university. He has developed new modules on Interactive Multimedia and Television Graphics.
Jon's research interests are focused on analysing film and video editing patterns in classical continuity editing and also developing methods to explore audience reactions to edited material.
He is preparing textbooks on a glossary of Film and Video Editing Terms and Concepts, and an introduction to the Principles of Television Graphic Design.
