Having previously worked at the Universities of Manchester, Chester and Central Lancashire, John was appointed as Professor of Media in the School in October 2006 and as Head of School in August 2007. He has retired from the university now, but retains a strong link as Visiting Professor of Media Studies. John is now:

Discipline Lead, Media  and Communications, Higher Education Academy, York.

In addition to his experience in broadcasting and as a producer and co-owner of a corporate video production company, he is an active researcher and writer. Alongside textbooks aimed at schools and colleges, his published works include the books Popular Music On Screen (1999) and The British Musical Film (2007) as well as a number of book chapters and articles.

 
In addition to interests in the musical and screen music, his research and teaching interests include aspects of broadcasting history, British cinema, and comedy. He has recently completed with  Glyn White a co-authored book, Laughing Matters: Understanding Radio, Film and Television Comedy (forthcoming, Manchester UP). He is currently researching the English comedian and actor Norman Wisdom. 
 
He has an interest in curriculum development, has acted as an external examiner at a variety of British Universities, and has undertaken work for the Quality Assurance Agency both as a subject reviewer and as a member of the Benchmarking Group for Film, Media, Television and Cultural Studies. He has been an Accreditor for the Higher Education Academy and an advocate of the importance of learning and teaching in higher education.
 
He has also been a season-ticket holder at Crewe Alexandra for longer than reason and sense would expect.
