Gareth began his teaching career in Bournemouth University in the late eighties before being appointed to a lecturing post at Salford in 1990. He currently serves as Associate Head of School with responsibility for Enterprise.

Gareth's PhD on Basil Wright and the Documentary Idea was completed with a Scholarship at the University of Stirling in 1990. His research has been primarily focused on factual forms. To this end he published Discipline and Liberty with Manchester University Press in 2003. More recently his work has focused on Lifestyle television. He has published several papers in this area and is currently editing a collection of papers on the subject for ASHGATE.

In addition to his theoretical work Gareth has developed a portfolio of practical work including adverts for radio and online as well as serving as staff writer for an online satirical magazine for most of 2005. Over the past three years films he has written and produced have been screened at the Edinburgh and Leeds film festivals amongst others. Two films have also been screened on Propeller TV and were chosen by the channel at a recent 'best of' short films screening.

Gareth has been very involved in the development of the Media division having helped create several of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In this capacity he also served as Head of the Media Division between 1997 and 2001. He has also been involved with other universities as external examiner and adviser.

He would love to be confident about the resurgence of the Welsh rugby side. But he can't.
