As a former student on the Band Musicianship course at Salford College of Technology (now the University of Salford) Duncan graduated with an Advanced Diploma (1985) and Graduate Diploma (1986) achieving both with distinctions in performance. He was awarded his MA in Performance in 2007.

In 1986 Duncan was appointed Concert Manager and since then has been responsible for organising tours, concerts, masterclasses, workshops and recordings, enabling music students to participate in invaluable performance opportunities. Students have benefited from performing with many distinguished artistes including; Julian Joseph, Matthew Barley, Stephen Mead, David Childs, Andy Scott, Mark Nightingale, Derek Watkins, James Morrison etc and enjoy associations with the BBC Philharmonic and military bands from the Royal Marines and the Coldstream Guards. Duncan has also managed university tours for bands and ensembles travelling around the United Kingdom and Europe, Russia, Iceland, Crete, Brazil and Ecuador. For a decade Duncan managed the Boosey & Hawkes National Youth Brass Band Championships. He also lectures in Arts Administration and tutors trombone.

Duncan is also a freelance professional trombonist. Undoubtedly at home with Jazz, Duncan’s roots however are grounded in Brass Banding. As solo trombone for the highly successful Swinton Concert Brass in the 1980’s he made his debut radio performance for the BBC’s ‘Listen to the Band’ and went on to become the British Open Solo Trombone Champion in 1989.

Duncan’s professional career opened up with session work for the children’s television programme ‘Umbrella’ (BBC) and for Radio 2’s late show ‘Night Ride’. This was followed by three years with Andy Prior and The Night Owls. As a Night Owl he toured extensively throughout the UK, enjoyed a successful summer season at Blackpool Tower, recorded 2 CD’s and made appearances on the BBC’s programme ‘Primetime’. Following this, as solo trombone for the Wigan Jazz Club Big Band, Duncan supported many international solo artistes including, James Morrison, Bobby Shew and ‘Jiggs’ Whigham and was invited, as a guest soloist, by the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra on their tours of the USA and Israel. Duncan broadened his experience further as a freelance musician playing for a variety of bands including Dave Hassell’s Apitos and the Big ‘Un and made further television recordings for Granada and the BBC, including ‘Hotel Getaway’ and ‘Songs of Praise’. During this time he also appeared at the Manchester and Wigan Jazz Festivals and for local jazz clubs.

Duncan continues to enjoy a successful professional career, playing regularly with a variety of bands and around the local jazz circuit. He is also a regular member of the Mark Gillbanks Orchestra. At present, Duncan is working in collaboration with fellow trombonist Lee Hallam on a tribute to the great Jay Jay Johnson and Kai Winding.
