Denise Vernon graduated from the University of Birmingham with BA (Hons in English and Classical Studies). She has a PGCE from the University of Hull and an MA in Cultural Representation from the University of Staffordshire.

She has written, adapted and directed Theatre, and has a particular interest in writing and performing for children. No classic text is safe and The Beggar's Opera, Helen (Euripides), A Christmas Carol and more have all been adapted to please an audience. She has been Drama Consultant for Lancashire County Council.

Primarily Denise has been a teacher, a term she prefers to lecturer, for over 20 years and a developer and coordinator of curriculum in Performance and Cultural Studies. While her first Degree was in English and Classical Studies, she has wide ranging research and teaching interests. She has delivered papers and published in Australian Studies, combining her interest in literature, drama, performance and identity politics. She was a long serving member of the British Australian Studies Association Committee. Currently her research has shifted, and recent papers draw on the relationship between performance and identity, with a particular focus on gender and comedy. These themes unite in her current PhD which investigates fashion design, gender and performance. Recent work has featured Germaine Greer, Vivienne Westwood and contemporary women's comedy. She's always up for a laugh but is incapable of delivering a joke. She's expert enough to leave that to the professionals.

Denise Vernon is Head of the Performance Division.
