We are delighted that Dave chose to come to Salford, UK in 2007 for his new career and life adventure as an academic, as our Professor of Popular Music.

Dr. David Sanjek received his BA in English and Philosophy from Connecticut College and his MA and PhD in Literature from Washington University.

Dr. Sanjek has taught classes in popular music and media studies at New York University, Hunter College, Fordham University and the New School for Social Research.

From 1991 to 2007, he was the Director of the Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) Archives in New York City. Affiliated with the company's Corporate Relations department, Dr. Sanjek oversaw the documentation of the company's history as well as their current presence in the music industry as the pre-eminent performance rights society. He served as its representative to a variety of private and governmental organizations, including the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian.

Dr. Sanjek has also been a consultant or advisor to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Experience Music Project, the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Center for Black Music Research. He has also been the President, Vice-President and Secretary of the U.S. Branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. He served as well on the board of the Blues Foundation of Memphis, Tennessee (1997-2003, 2004-2007), acts as co-chair of the Blues Hall of Fame and received the Foundation's Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Historic Preservation in 1998. He also serves currently on the advisory board of the Society for Ethnomusicology.

Dr. Sanjek is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Popular Music Studies, Popular Music & Society, American Studies and the New Grove Encyclopaedia of American Music.

He has published widely on popular music, film, media studies, copyright law and popular culture as well as been an on-line reviewer of books and film. He has lectured extensively in the US, UK and Australia, most recently at the annual Experience Music Project Pop Conference, Rutgers University, University of Iowa, University of Maryland Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, New School for Social Research, American Studies Association, Modern Language Association and the Duke University Law School. He has been a speaker on National Public Radio and National Radio Australia as well as television programs on the BBC, A&E and Bravo.

Dr. Sanjek is preparing two books for publication: Always On My Mind: Music, Memory and Money and Stories We Could Tell: Putting Words to American Popular Music.
